Kitchen Cabinet Painting Makeover in Arnold, Missouri

From Dark to Delightful! This project spotlight shows a recent kitchen cabinet transformation we completed in Arnold, Missouri. The goal was to breathe new life into a dated kitchen dominated by dark-stained cabinets. We achieved a stunning result, showcasing the power of thoughtful refinishing and the impact it can have on a home’s heart.

The original kitchen boasted dark-stained cabinets that, while well-maintained, made the space look dark and gloomy. This weighed down the overall feel and made the kitchen appear smaller than its actual size. Our client desired a brighter, more contemporary aesthetic complementing their modern lifestyle.
Our approach involved a proven refinishing process to achieve a dramatic yet elegant transformation.

Here’s a breakdown of the steps we took:

  • Protection is Key: Countertops, backsplashes, and floors were shielded with a combination of tape, masking paper, plastic sheeting, and drop cloths to prevent paint splatter and overspray. This ensured a clean work environment and minimal cleanup.
  • Surface Preparation: The first step involved meticulous preparation. Cabinet doors, drawers, and bases were meticulously sanded with 320 grit sandpaper. This ensured a smooth, even surface for the paint to adhere to. Following the sanding, a thorough cleaning with acetone removed any lingering hand oils or residue that could compromise the finish.
  • Enhanced Finish: For optimal results, cabinet doors and drawers were removed and taken to our professional spray booth for refinishing. This controlled environment ensures a flawless, factory-like finish free from dust particles and imperfections.
  • Prime Time: Once the cabinets were prepped and protected, a single coat of Bin Primer, a high-quality shellac-based primer, was applied. This primer acts as a bonding agent, promoting better adhesion between the cabinets and the paint, and providing a uniform base for the finish coat.
  • Painting for Perfection: Two coats of Centurion Cabinet Finish, a waterborne urethane paint, were applied using a spray technique. This method ensures an even, flawless finish that is both durable and resistant to everyday wear and tear. The chosen color was Benjamin Moore’s “Baby Fawn” OC-15 as selected by the client. This color choice brought a fresh, light, and airy feel, completely transforming the space.
  • Accentuating the Island: A special touch was added to the project with an accent color applied to the island. This addition provided a subtle yet impactful design element, further enhancing the overall aesthetic. The color chosen for the island is Valspar “Boughs of Pine” 5007-4C.

The completed cabinet painting project exceeded expectations. The once-dark cabinets were reborn in a light and airy color, completely transforming the kitchen’s aesthetics. The space instantly felt brighter, more spacious, and undeniably modern. The client’s chosen color, coupled with the satin sheen finish, was the perfect combination to bring the dream into reality. The island’s accent color added a touch of personality while maintaining a cohesive design.

This project serves as a reminder that a kitchen makeover doesn’t always require a complete cabinet overhaul. Refinishing is a cost-effective and sustainable solution that can create a dramatic and lasting impact.
