The First Impression

We’ve all heard the expression that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This goes for personal interactions and also for places like your home. For many homes, that first impression is made in the Foyer and nothing stands out more than the staircase as you step through the front door.

Just as with any aspect of interior design, the layout and colors of a staircase have changing trends and styles. The blonde oak of the 90’s and 2000’s may not have the same appeal to you that it did the day you moved in. Or maybe the white spindles and handrails seem too monochromatic for your taste these days. The good thing is that no matter the layout you desire, the expert team at Kennedy Painting is well versed in providing the facelift you desire for your staircase.

STAIRCASE REFINISHING STAIN COLORS & FINISHES

A popular and timeless look you often see these days is a two-color scheme of a very dark espresso or black color for the walking surfaces (treads), handrails and posts with the Risers, Skirt Boards and Spindles painted a bright white. For an even more modern spin to staircase design, the wooden spindles can be replaced with wrought iron to provide even more sharp contrast to the surrounding surfaces.

When changing the currently stained surfaces to a painted finish, the preparation and high quality paint are the keys to longevity. All surfaces must be sanded, thoroughly cleaned and fully primed with an oil or shellac based primer prior to receiving two coats of a premium trim Enamel. If the surfaces are being stained to a darker color, the surfaces will again need to be sanded and cleaned but instead of primer, a gel stain is applied to the surfaces followed by three coats of a premium spar urethane (clear coat).

By following these steps, your staircase will be as durable as it has been for you over the years and provide an amazing update for the entry to your home. While we’ve laid out a few options on color schemes in this post, the options are truly limitless. Talk To Your Local Painting Company

Beware of chipper DIY staircase painting articles and videos. They may make the process look simple and easy, but the cold truth is that unless you have the right products, experience, equipment, and time, staircase painting is best left to professionals. There really is no margin for error, and we’re guessing you probably aren’t into the idea of experimenting and dealing with trial and error.
