Brick can be a real asset.
It’s durable, low maintenance, and in the right environment it offers tremendous charm. But, when it’s dominating a space, like, for example, a huge fireplace in a living room, it can tend to make the room feel dark and dated. A little like taking a trip back to the 80s, only missing the wood paneled walls.
So, what can you do? Removing brick is costly and involved, plus it means that you don’t have the benefit of a fireplace (which does add visual interest).
Here’s an alternative.
Painting a Brick Fireplace
Our clients in Chesterfield had a very specific vision for their brick.
Garrett, one of our fantastic painters, caught this vision completely, finishing a custom, 3-tone whitewash finish for them. He blended 3 Sherwin-Williams colors to create this unique look, including White, Repose Gray, and Amazing Gray. This kind of finish requires patience and a skilled hand, but the results (as you can see) are stunning.

What Should You Keep in Mind?
Painting brick is a fantastic option, but just remember that once you take the plunge you are totally committed. It’s basically irreversible.
This also means that it’s a process best left in the hands of professional painters. DIY projects can be fun, but there’s a lot on the line here. When it’s done right though, it can be a tremendous asset to your home’s style. Plus, you get to keep your fireplace, and save the money you would’ve spent during a demo/remodel project. That’s a win-win!
