Brick Painting

When it comes to the curb appeal of your home, there are few transformations that change the look of your home more than painting the brick. While the change in appearance is apparent and the flashy new look is worthy of a Home and Garden brochure, that luster can quickly fade if the paint begins to peel seemingly as quickly as it was applied. Unfortunately, this is a reality that confronts too many homeowners when their brick painting project was not completed properly. The good news is, the expert painting crews at Kennedy Painting are well equipped to give you both the transformative look of painted brick AND a finish that is durable and will last for years.

The process:

When painting brick, as with any painted surface, it is crucial to have a clean surface free to pollen, mildew and other surface debris. We achieve this through a thorough pressure washing to allow for proper adhesion of coatings. Once the brick is clean, all bricks will receive a full coat of Masonry Primer to seal the brick and allow for the paint to properly bond to the surface. This step is absolutely crucial and if this step is skipped or done poorly, paint failure will surely occur sooner than you would like. Once the primer has been applied, it is time for the icing on the cake, the painting.

Two coats of a premium exterior paint, like Sherwin Williams Resilience is applied to the brick to fill the porous surface of brick and provide a uniform finish. While one heavy coat of paint may provide a uniform finish, it will not provide the thickness and durability of applying two full coats of paint with time for the paint to dry between coats. Again, the difference between aesthetics and durability may seem minor but they are absolutely crucial in achieving a finish that will last the test of time.

A couple additional points:

  • It is always recommended to have a professional tuck pointer review your home prior to painting brick. If tuck pointing is needed, they can complete the work so that all of your brick and mortar is structurally sound and ready for paint. Also, be sure that the mortar has had adequate time to cure before priming so that adhesion problems do not arise
  • Colors: does your home have a concrete or stone foundation that connects to the brick? These surfaces are prepared and painted in the same manner as brick but also provide an opportunity to use an accent color on your home. We are happy to help with the selection of your colors to make sure that the finished look is one you will love for years!
