You never know what may lead to a painting project and our recent work with St. Mary of Victories Hungarian Catholic Church in St. Louis City is an amazing example of that. Located very close to Interstate 44, in the Chouteau’s Landing Historic District south of the Gateway Arch, they called us to help repair and paint an area on the front entrance that had tire marks from a truck that lost a tire on the interstate. We are grateful to have been hired to complete this project and now have quite the interesting story to tell as well.
Historic Saint Mary of Victories Catholic Church, just south of the Gateway Arch, is a splendid and unique part of the heritage of old Saint Louis. Founded in 1843 for German immigrants, it became the city’s Hungarian Catholic Church and cultural center in 1957. Its acclaimed architecture, beautiful old paintings, ornate statuary and noted historical personalities have earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few consecrated churches in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and has a magnificent high altar with hundreds of sacred relics. Aside from the cultural and architectural significance of the church, their monthly luncheon attracts visitors from far and wide to enjoy an amazing spread of traditional Hungarian fare.
DETAILS OF THE JOB
Our project consisted of stabilizing the existing jamb and casing by adding a structural epoxy to the damaged areas. Our decision to repair instead of replacing the entire casing and jamb was to keep intact the original craftsmanship of this historical property. Our team then sealed the tire marks with an oil-based primer and painted the Entryway with Sherwin Williams Resilience to restore the beauty of the entryway.
